Microscope Parts & Accessories

Here are some of the more common parts and accessories for microscopes:

:: Microscope Eyepieces ::
Different eyepieces are useful for changing the magnification of a microscope. Eyepieces are specified by FN number, which indicates the field of view (FOV) when used with a 1X objective lens. For binocular and stereo microscopes, eyepieces should always be purchased as a matched set.

You can also get an eyepiece micrometer, also called a reticle. This consists of a tiny grid pattern etched on an eyepiece lens. It is used to make measurements of the size of objects seen through a microscope.

Barlow lenses are used to inexpensively double the magnification power of the microscope.

:: Microscope Lighting ::
Microscope lighting systems are available as external units to provide flexiblity in positioning and application use. Microscope illumination falls under three main types:

  • Free-standing halogen spot lighting
  • Self-supporting halogen, fiber-optic lighting (often with dual arms)
  • Fluorescent ring (annular) lighting that mounts around the nosepiece
  • :: Microscope Stands ::
    Three major types of microscope stands are available and used for various applications:

  • Boom stands. Also called universal stands, boom stands offer the most flexibility and allow the microscope to be rotated into and out of position easily.

  • Post stands. Also called pole stands, post stands feature a focusing holder that can be moved up or down. Many pole stands have integral lighting systems.

  • Arm stands. Arm stands have integrated focusing holders and lighting. Articulated arm stands offer motion in three dimensions.
