Microscopes for Student & School Use

Perhaps the biggest application for microscopes are those used by students in schools or home-schooling and by hobbyists. Microscopes that will be used in schools need to be durable and relatively inexpensive. Virtually every school laboratory has a set of "student" or "laboratory" microscopes. This means buying quality microscopes from a reputable dealer that specializes in optical equipment - and staying away from microscopes sold in department, science/nature, and toy stores.

At the lower school grades, monocular compound microscopes will probably suffice. These feature a single eyepiece and can be had for $200 and lower. At middle-school and high-school levels, binocular microscopes are the most common microscope found.

At the college and university levels, both compound binocular and stereo microscopes can be found, often with digital cameras attached.
